*Reminder: Halle Berry hosts the PBS special “For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots,” a salute to black servicemen and women debuting this month. [Check local listings for premiere date in your area.]
The film, executive produced by Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr., begins at the dawn of U.S. history, chronicling African-Americans who risked their lives to create and preserve freedom for their country while attempting to acquire it for themselves.
The program uses letters, diaries, speeches, journalistic accounts, historical text and military records to document the accomplishments of African-American men and women since the earliest days of the republic. Their personal stories paint a moving historical account of service and sacrifice, from the Revolutionary War – whose first casualty was a Black man, Crispus Attucks – to today’s battle against global terrorism.
“For Love of Liberty” is narrated by Ashley Brooks, Gen. Colin Powell provides the introduction, and off-camera stories are told by such celebs as Danny Glover, Alfre Woodard, Blair Underwood, Ruby Dee, Larenz Tate, Eriq LaSalle, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Jeffrey Wright, Robert Townsend and more.
The four-hour high-definition film will air in two parts on PBS stations across the country starting tonight, Feb. 1. (Check local listings.) The presenting station is Maryland Public Television. The DVD will also premiere this month. Watch a promo clip below.
