Former New Orleans police office Michael Hunter

*Initial press reports tended to cast doubt on the accounts of New Orleans police officers shooting unarmed and wounded Blacks on the Danziger Bridge as they attempted to flee the city in the aftermath Hurricane Katrina.

However, determined prosecutors last week succeeded in getting a third ex-officer to plead guilty in the shootings.

Last week’s guilty plea was different from the other two. Former officer Michael Hunter described what actually happened that night in August 2005 and he basically confirmed the accounts of the surviving victims.

Hunter contradicted a police report which alleged the Blacks shot at the officers who returned fire leaving two dead and four wounded. According to Hunter, the officers opened fire first and even after he shouted “Cease fire!” he saw officers, one with an assault rifle, open fire on unarmed civilians as they lay wounded or attempted to run or hide.
