*According to a just released report from the Defense Manpower Data Center, African Americans have been losing leadership positions in the U.S. military in recent years.

The report found that while Blacks comprise 17 percent of the active duty forces in the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard, they make up just 5.5 percent of the military’s flag officers: generals, admirals and the equivalent.

President Harry Truman integrated U.S. military forces 62 years ago. Following the signing of that executive order, both African American presence and advancement in the various branches of the military soared.

The war in Vietnam helped to accelerate Blacks into military leadership positions but the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have failed to do the same, says the report. (source: Taylor Media Services – www.blacknewsjournal.net)
