*DNA analysis has been taken to a whole new level on the PBS series Faces Of America hosted by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.  In it the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard explores genetics and ancestral lineage in a way that blends science & history and gives evidence of the cross cultural ties of all Americans and proves our ethnic link to the world.

That kind of tenacity for details and academic excellence has led to 50 honorary doctorates for Dr. Gates and he sits atop several high ranking positions including the WEB Du Bois Institute for African and American Research at Harvard University and

TheRoot.com; which is an on line comprehensive resource of African American and Africana Studies.

The African-American Lives eight volume encyclopedia (published by Oxford 2008) are among the 12 literary works edited by Henry Louis Gates.  Additionally his career has been noted by commendations such as the Ralph Lowell Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The MacArthur Foundation Genius Award and A National Humanities Medal to name a few.

Gates was named one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Americans” in 1997, one of the “100 Most Influential Black Americans” by Ebony in 2005 and a member of Ebony’s “Power 150” in 2009.  On Friday June 2nd, Dr. Gates distinguished career will be cited by a 365Black Award from the McDonald’s corporation.  365Black is McDonald’s pledge to celebrate African American culture and achievement 365 days a year.

Dr. Gates’ life and work emulate this principle and makes him a perfect candidate for this honor.
