Angie Stone at the 2010 JazzFest West show

*The 2-day weekend Omega Event’s JazzFest West in San Dimas, California (July 18-19, 2010) was arguably  the best of its 15 years.  This year the show sizzled with R&B and Jazz and featured  such all star artists as Ron Isley, Chrisette Michele, Angie Stone, Lalah Hathaway, Rahsaan Patterson, Charlie Wilson, and Brian Culberton, to name a few. And of course, was there, too.

You can imagine that with the temperature around 100 degrees, festival goers had to seek refuge to cool off. Temporary relief was found under a tent where VIPs enjoyed the festival’s ALL-U-Can Eat buffet and All-U-Can drink beverages and bar. Yes, I said All-U-Can drink “bar!”  Not bad… the food was delicious and we gotta give a shout out to “Smokey’s House of BBQ.” Thank you!

Overall, the festival’s atmosphere was beautiful; a rainbow of colors from vendors to thousands of good-looking audience members. They all enjoyed the festival’s 15th year at Bonelli Park.  By the way, in between stage performances, there was lots and eating and drinking and folks dancing and bumping to the sounds of DJ Jonathan Phillips. Yes, the party was on at all times!

Finally the sun began to fade and it was time for the contagious one, Mr. Ronald Isley to take the stage.  Isley, a youthful looking 68 – after what seemed to be a long wait of anticipation – stepped out of his trailer dressed in all white, looking very cool and calm as he walked towards the stage with his charismatic swagger.  It felt good to be in his presence … to witness the return of Mr. Big.

As he made his way to the stage, the assembled sea of festival-goers took to their feet clapping and chanting his name …  yes, they were ready to “souled-out” by Mr. Isley.  And he delivered, too. He performed his catalogue of hits including “Hello it’s Me,”  “Who’s That Lady,” “Summer Breeze,” “Between The Sheets” “Groove with you,” “Don’t’ Say Goodnight” and “Fight The Power” to name a few.  In short, Ronald Isley shut it down! A fitting ending to 2 days of incredible R&B and Jazz.
