*Quentin Earl Darrington, who played Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the recent Tony-nominated revival of Ragtime, has been cast as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the new Jasmine Guy-helmed musical I Dream.
The rhythm-and-blues opera runs through July 31 at Atlanta’s Alliance Stage at the Woodruff Arts Center beginning tonight – with an official opening scheduled for July 9, reports Playbill.
“I feel honored to be directing such a landmark production,” Guy said in a statement. “With a glorious score set to such a moving American story, this is an exciting and emotional experience. And the fact that we are premiering in my hometown, where so much of the story originated, is both momentous and fitting.”
Production notes state: “Although the piece is largely based on real events in Dr. King’s life, it does not purport to be an authorized biographical representation of those events. Where necessary or desirable, the creative imperatives of a stage show have therefore taken marginal precedence over historical precision.”
I Dream features book, music and lyrics by Douglas Tappin, with additional music and lyrics by Cedric Perrier. The cast also includes Demetria McKinney as Coretta and Bob Carlisle.
