*Torrance, Calif. — Actor Lance Gross was on hand to kick off the Toyota Green Initiative Tour on Thursday, October 14, at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD.

The Toyota Green Initiative is an environmental stewardship platform designed to empower Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students and alumni on the benefits of adopting a sustainable lifestyle.

An HBCU graduate, Gross currently stars on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and starred in Our Family Wedding. The tour was launched at Bowie State University (BSU) with a series of activities including a Green House Dedication Ceremony.

The Toyota Green Initiative provides multiple touch points to mobilize the collegiate audience to go green including a content-rich website (www.ToyotaGreen.com) and an HBCU campus tour.

Bowie State University was the first stop in a cross-country tour designed to empower HBCU students and alumni on the benefits of adopting a sustainable lifestyle. BSU was selected to launch the tour based on its strong commitment to sustainability including an active Climate Commitment Coordinating Committee, charged with leading the University’s green initiatives.

The turnout for the day of service led by Lance Gross was an overwhelming success with more than 130 students participating.  The BSU launch touched over 2,600 students who came out to learn more about the Toyota Green Initiative. In addition to the day of service, a lecture on sustainability was led by Toyota Green Initiative Coalition Members Lance Gross and Earthseed, LLC, an organization dedicated to the transformation of urban communities and Jim Colon, vice president of Toyota product communications for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

At the hub of the Toyota Green Initiative is the interactive website ToyotaGreen.com, which will provide easy cost-saving tips on going green, eco-conscious articles, videos, campus events and volunteer programs.
ToyotaGreen.com features a Promise Drive to secure personal commitments from site visitors on the reduction of their ecological footprint and adoption of a green living philosophy. The website is also connected with social media platforms to encourage conversations on green living.

The Toyota Green Initiative Tour will reach 27 HBCU campuses through mobile tour sponsorships of the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and the 2010 BET Black College Tour with a fully-immersive educational experience leveraging unique elements of ToyotaGreen.com.

The tour will feature a simulated recycling center, and energy-efficient monitors centered around an 18-foot tree installation built of sustainable materials, powered by a solar generator.
