*Publisher 2K Sports claims it is trying to halt the distribution of its provocative Top Spin 4 ad featuring tennis star Serena Williams.
As an alternative to traditional commercials, many companies release ads disguised as viral videos as an attempt to create buzz around the product. This spot was supposedly created as part of the official marketing campaign for its new video game featuring Serena, but was scrapped by 2K before it ever hit the airwaves.
The ad (seen below) dubs Serena “the world’s sexiest tennis player” and shows her in revealing clothing, including shots of her famous derriere and audio of tennis grunts.
As the story goes, the video was posted online by the other woman in the ad – who plays “the world’s sexiest tennis gamer.” According to the blog Joystiq, she leaked the ad out of anger over 2K’s decision to scrap the project.
“As part of the process for creating marketing campaigns to support our titles, we pursue a variety of creative avenues,” 2K told Joystiq. “This video is not part of the title’s final marketing campaign and its distribution was unauthorized.”
At the end of the ad, Serena is heard saying, “You realize this is a fantasy, right?”
