*In Los Angeles this morning, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced a complete overhaul of the Grammy Awards, including the ways in which academy members vote for nominees, the process by which the academy categorizes nominees and the ways in which it adds and eliminates categories.

The academy’s vice president of awards, Bill Freimuth; Chair Emeritus and Grammy winner Jimmy Jam; and Chief Executive Neil Portnow detailed the restructuring in a Santa Monica press conference.

Over the years, the number of categories had grown to 109, resulting in sometimes confusing and controversial nominations. The restructuring will address these issues, the academy officials said.
