*After a summer’s worth of hype and buildup, the Oprah Winfrey Network is finally set to premiere what it hopes will back-to-back ratings superheroes: “The Rosie Show,” followed by “Oprah’s Lifeclass.”
An indication of just how vital the shows are, OWN’s parent company Discovery has decided to premiere both shows across four of its other channels, which means viewers of TLC, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Fit & Health and Planet Green will also see “The Rosie Show” make its debut at 7 p.m. ET on Monday (Oct. 10), followed by “Oprah’s Lifeclass” at 8.
As previously reported, the promotion machine for both shows began in July in Beverly Hills, with both Rosie O’Donnell and Oprah Winfrey attending the Television Critics Association summer press tour to plug, plug, plug.
“Last June, I went to see Rosie, and we talked about the idea of her coming to OWN,” Oprah told the gathered critics. “I was so excited because, as we all know, and as she knew, she could have gone to any of the big broadcasters, but she chose to align herself, her talent, her big creative vision with me and with OWN, and I could not be prouder to have you as a part of this family.”
OWN says “Rosie” will feature the host’s “hilarious take on current events, celebrity and human interest guests, comedy and games, live performances by top artists and a behind the scenes look at Rosie — and her staff – as she settles into a new world and embarks upon a new chapter in her life.”
Rosie said the “behind the scenes” idea of her show was inspired by reality television.
“The success of reality TV has really influenced the way we all watch TV and what we’re expecting, so we’re going to have a reality concept integrated with the talk show concept,” she told critics. “Not a ‘Gary Shandling’ type, fake scripted way, but in an actual way where we are going to show you what it takes.
“I think part of the reason that people liked my first show is they saw me love things, things like other celebrities, things like little children who came on, things like my family. So now, I think, by doing a little bit of a behind-the-scenes incorporated in the show, you’re going to get to see how I do that with my actual staff.”
In the bonus audio below, Rosie shares her scattered reaction to Oprah’s initial phone call asking her to join OWN, and explains why the TV titan still makes her as nervous today as she was the first time they met years ago. [Scroll down to watch the ‘Rosie’ promo.]
