*The moment word got out that Jennifer Hudson would be playing Winnie Mandela, critics voiced their doubts as to whether or not she could pull it off.
Some wondered if Hudson would be able to nail the accent, while other thought it would serve better to have a South African actress playing the role.
“Well, you know, I try not to think of those things but like I always say…no one knows your potential the way you do,” Hudson told HipHollywood in response to the critics.
Hudson didn’t let the naysayers get to her and embarked on an “intimidating” performance. She says, “facing Winnie was definitely like, the most intimidating, I mean, it’s Winnie Mandela.”
“Winnie Mandela” is the story of Nelson Mandela’s second wife who helped him fight against apartheid in South Africa. Terrence Howard plays Nelson Mandela and actually helped Jennifer meet the challenge of play the iconic Winnie.
“Working with Terrence, he automatically makes you raise your bar”, Hudson boasted about her co-star.
“Winnie Mandela” from TD Jakes is in theaters now.
