This is the place where I first met Oscar De La Hoya in 1997 as he was in training to fight David Kamau.
The air was so fresh that it’s no wonder why so many world class fighters have chosen this location to prepare for their upcoming bouts.
It’s such a serene local at eight thousand feet above sea level and it seems like it takes forever to get there, but once you’re there it’s like being in paradise.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has been in training up there at “Sugar” Shane Mosley’s place for the last couple of months as he prepares to go against Floyd “Money” Mayweather on September 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and folks I got to tell you something if this young kid looks as good in the ring as he did when I saw him the other day, Mayweather might just have his hands full.
He looked very sharp and strong as he went through his regimen and looking back on some of his previous bouts this kid reminds me so much of the great Roberto Duran because he can hit with both hands, very hard at that. He’s undefeated in 42 bouts with only one draw.
He’s originally from Guadalajara, Mexico and is only 23 years old. He’s become a sensation in his country and there’s surely going to be a strong contingent of fans from his country, and from here as well that will be cheering for him on September 14 in Las Vegas.
He says he’s ready for Floyd. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
From Big Bear I journeyed to Las Vegas the next day where the media from around the world gathered to take a close look at the great Floyd ” Money” Mayweather who is now undefeated in 44 fights.
There’s much to be said about him as he is a five division world champion, and has captured eight world titles. And he continues to dominate the boxing scene with his superb skills.
His father Floyd Sr. calls him a technician and he says he is capable of methodically taking apart anyone he’s confronted with, as long as he follows his instructions.
This one thing is for sure, there has been forty four opponents that he’s faced and not one of them has been able to figure out the puzzle to beat him.
He constantly likes to remind you that the only way that this could happen is if you come in the ring with your A game, and have a good chin. Otherwise you can forget about it.
This is going to be a big boxing event because it will also feature Danny Garcia going against Lucas Matthysse in the semi-main event.
And not to forget, there will be several fighters from Mayweather Promotions on the card including Ishe Smith, Lanelle Bellows, Badou Jack, and Ashley Theophane that will also be featured.
This is the one event you don’t want to miss, so get your popcorn ready.
This will all be brought to you by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, and Canelo Promotions and will be telecast live on Showtime pay per view.
Coming up next weekend out at the Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola returns to the ring to go against Seth Mitchell in a heavyweight contest.
This is a doubleheader as Rafael Marquez, the brother of Juan Manuel Marquez will be going against Efrain Esquivias in a jr. featherweight duel and this will all be telecast live on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Get ready folks for some real boxing drama in the next couple of weeks.
As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
