*De La Soul member Maseo has expressed pride in his son after his college team narrowly missed out on winning the college championship title Monday night.
Tre Mason, a junior running back at Auburn University, helped the team gain an early lead on Florida State during the BCS National Championship Game. DJ Maseo, (born Vincent Mason), was at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, Calif. and took to Twitter as Tre put his team ahead just minutes into the first quarter.
The proud dad wrote, “My boy scored the first touchdown of the night… The score is 7-3 Auburn! The Energy Is Crazy Out Here!!!”
Young Mason scored another touchdown with less than two minutes left in the game to put the Tigers back on top, with a 31-27 lead, but the Florida State Seminoles, led by star quarterback and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, pulled off the comeback to grab a last-gasp victory, winning 34-31.
Maseo had nothing but praise for his son’s efforts, tweeting: “I have to say tonight’s game was an incredible experience. I’m truly proud of my son. I am inspired by his love and passion for football.”
Tre, who apologized to fans after the loss, ran a total of 195 yards, the second-most in a BCS Championship Game behind Vince Young’s 200 yards in 2006.
