After 4 million viewers tuned in to watch the movie in July, “Being Mary Jane” the series premieres tonight on BET.
The network’s first one-hour scripted drama focuses on the life of successful cable news anchor, Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union).
EURweb associate Fahnia Thomas talked to Union about playing a more sexual role.

“Women are incredible creatures. We are mothers, we have higher demands, we deal with a lot and still keep it together, said costar Lisa Vidal. “Our show represents the reality of that.”
“We need positive role models on TV. We don’t have that anymore,” said the icon. “Reality shows are ok but these young people need to see relationships without name calling and more respect.”
“Several! We have several similarities. I have had love that goes back and forth, it’s difficult to let go,” said Bishop. “Life imitates art. Art imitates life.”
“I want viewers to understand that sometimes relationships are worth fighting for,” said the actress. “And if you feel like you’re in a really great place, with a respectful person, sometimes you can work it out.”
Union is accompanied by a stellar cast that includes Raven Goodwin,
Richard Brooks, B.J. Britt, Aaron Spears, Latarsha Rose, Richard Roundtree, and Margaret Avery.
