John P. Kellog, Esq.

*John P. Kellogg, Esq., former member of the group, Cameo, entertainment lawyer and Assistant Chair of Music Business/Management at Berklee College of Music in Boston has developed a free online course, “Introduction to the Music Business.”

Offered through the Harvard and MIT founded edX, a consortium of the world’s best universities and colleges offering free online study on a variety of topics, Kellogg’s course is the first on the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform to focus on Music Business.

In addition to being the first to develop and teach a free MOOC dealing with the music business, the author of Take Care of Your Music Business, is also a talent judge for the Emmy Award winning Community Auditions, a radio and television music business commentator, and former president of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA,) an international organization of over 114 institutions with industry-related programs. Throughout his legal career he has represented artists, producers, and record companies and amassed a client list that included LSG, Rock and Roll members The O’Jays, rapper, G. Dep and the late Gerald Levert.

During the six-week course starting January 27, 2014, Kellogg will offer information on the proliferation of 360-degree deals, the value of the copyright, responsibilities of managers and agents, the importance of live performance and more.

Kellogg says, “Crazy, Sexy, Cool–The TLC Story on VH-1 scored 4.5M viewers who were able to see, first-hand, the perils of the music industry and created a viral sensation with everyone asking “where does the money go?” The program underscored what I convey to clients and students: the need for anyone interested in surviving and growing in the entertainment business to first get a greater understanding of its practices and principles.  I’m excited that this course offers that opportunity to the general public.”

Dean of Berklee Online, Carin Nuernberg, states, “The music industry is undergoing enormous change, and as a result, musicians increasingly have to know how to manage all aspects of their careers.  John Kellogg’s wide-ranging experience and expertise translate to the most comprehensive, accessible guide to where the industry has been and where it is going. His lectures are incredibly engaging—a must-see for anyone wanting a career in music.”
