*Damon Wayans Jr. is finally and officially staying as a series regular on “New Girl.”
Although he appeared on the show’s pilot episode before leaving the series during seasons one and two while being replaced by Morris, the news of his promotion comes at little to no surprise.
He did appear in 17 episodes of season three, but its season four he would be promoted to main cast.
But it made sense for him to leave the Fox show. Over at ABC, he was co-starring on “Happy Endings,” but the show didn’t end happy — being cancelled after three seasons in 2013.
He left “New Girl” after the pilot was picked up because “Happy Endings” was surprisedly picked up for a second season.
But season four isn’t his first promotion with “New Girl.” He signed on to guest star in six episodes of season three before his role was extended for the season.
“It’s hard to balance six characters, let alone five, but he has worked so well with so many different people,” executive producer Brett Baer told THR on Monday. “We’ve had him do stories with everybody and he just killed it.”
Baer explained it well — Wayans is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood and television. He turned down many opportunities to star in other TV pilots.
But here’s to seeing him co-star as Coach — the driven former athlete, personal trainer, middle school coach and roommate.
