*Mission accomplished for LeVar Burton!
Less than 24 hours after he went online for donations, the former “Star Trek: The Next Generation” star has hit his “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter goal of $1 million, according to media reports. Burton first alerted online supporters of his desire to create a new version of “Reading Rainbow” at 6:50 a.m. PT on Wednesday. By 5 p.m. PT, his campaign reached its goal.
“Reading Rainbow” originally ran from 1983 to 2006. After original episodes stopped airing, the children’s series continued in reruns until 2009.
The new “Reading Rainbow” will be a new version of the show spearheaded by Burton that will be available to any child with access to the Internet. In addition, the actor plans to make the popular program accessible for teachers by providing a “classroom version” for educators. Low-income schools will also be included in the new effort as Burton leads the charge for a nonprofit that will provide free copies of “Reading Rainbow” for low-income school.
Donors for Burton’s campaign will be able to take advantage of various rewards, including potentially getting to wear the entertainer’s famous “Star Trek” visor.
