*Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Celine Sciamma’s “Girlhood,” the opening night film at the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, reports Variety.
The film centers on a 16 year-old-girl, played by Karidja Toure, as she seeks her path in life amidst a “girl gang” in the northwest area of Paris.
Oppressed by her family setting, dead-end school prospects and the boys law in the neighborhood, Marieme (Toure) starts a new life after meeting a group of three free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom.
“Girlhood” is Sciamma’s third feature following “Water Lillies” and “Tomboy.”
Strand plans to release the film early next year.
