*Lucasfilm announced today that Lupita Nyong’o has been cast in “Star Wars: Episode VII.”
The current “It Girl” had been rumored to be in the running for a part in the film since she met with J.J. Abrams even before her Oscar win for “12 Years a Slave.”
Also joining the cast is 6-foot-3 British actress Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy staid in a statement. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
The first installment in a new trilogy, “Episode VII” hits theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. But fans are already buzzing about the film which sees the return of original “Star Wars” trilogy stars Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C3P0), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2D2).
Newcomers John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley and Andy Serkis round out the cast. Swedish actor Max von Sydow is also on board.
