Susan Sarandon and Melissa McCarthy in “Tammy”

*Moviegoers of a certain age may see Susan Sarandon in the upcoming film “Tammy” and have immediate flashbacks to another film some 23 years ago, in which she also spent a majority of her screen time in a car, driving across country.

“Actually we didn’t even think about it for the longest time until we were doing press and they brought a car,” the actress told reporters at a “Tammy” press conference. “I said, ‘Now you know that might remind people of that other movie.’ And they were like, ‘Oh yeah.’”

In 1991’s “Thelma & Louise,” Sarandon and Geena Davis played best friends who hit the road for a getaway, only to end up on the run. In “Tammy,” out July 2, the 67-year-old actress plays Pearl – also on a road trip, but with her granddaughter, played by the film’s co-writer and producer Melissa McCarthy in the title role.

Tammy is itching to get away from her life that had suddenly spiraled out of control, but she’s broke and doesn’t have a car. Pearl is the only person she knows who has wheels and cash. Also, Pearl has been wanting to see Niagra Falls…so off they go.

Below, Sarandon explains how Melissa and her husband, co-star and co-writer Ben Falcone convinced her to play somebody’s grandmama. Melissa chimes in as well.

“Tammy” opens in theaters July 2. Watch the trailer below.
