brandy - oprahs where are they now

*Brandy shared some interesting thoughts on stardom for today’s generation of young artists and she shared them with Oprah Winfrey.

The singer/actress, who came on the scene at age 15, says being a star on the rise can be difficult at best for any teen. However, she’s convinced it’s much more difficult for today’s young stars. Why? Social media.

In an appearance on tonight’s (08-03-14) “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” interview, she explains the challenge of living in a world that is so socially connected.

“Oh my God… the opinions are so in-your-face,” she says. “I feel for the young artists today because people can just type them anything that they want to say and [be] negative, you know?”

Brandy says that if social media had been around during her teen years, she doubts she would have been able to handle her haters having such direct access to her.

“I don’t think I would have made it in this generation,” she admits. “I don’t think I had… that strength that you need to really have a sense of self.”

Even though she got considerable time in the game, Brandy admits that she still struggles reading hateful comments as an adult.

“They say whatever [they want],” she says. “And things still affect me now.”

Oprah also asked Brandy why she lied to her about being married when she interviewed her ion 2002.

“At that time, being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend,” she says in the above video. “It was a sin.”

With her innocent, clean-cut reputation, the Grammy-winning singer also felt the pressure to maintain her public image.

“I felt the pressure of having to be perfect. And I was scared,” Brandy admits. “I thought that everything that I have worked hard for and everything that I worked to build — the image that I worked so hard to build — was threatened.”

Now, the 35-year-old mother feels remorse for lying to Oprah.

“I’m really sorry for that,” Brandy apologizes. “I mean, you just don’t lie to Oprah!”

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs tonight and every Sunday at 9pm E/P on OWN.
