Quarterback Colin Kaepernick #7 of the San Francisco 49ers looks on during the second quarter of their game against the Chicago Bears at Levi’s Stadium on September 14, 2014 in Santa Clara, California

*During Sunday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the first player to get penalized under the league’s new “inappropriate language” rule.

It wasn’t immediately clear just what the particulars of his infraction were and Kaepernick is claiming he didn’t say anything inappropriate.

“I didn’t say anything,” Kaepernick said via the MercuryNews.com.

Although the league opted not to make using offensive racial slurs and the n-word a 15-yard, unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty, it did urge officials to penalize players for racial and homophobic comments. Kaepernick said he did not use a slur and, asked if he was surprised at the penalty, he said, “Yes.”

The flag flew just after Kaepernick threw his second interception and the Bears scored the go-ahead touchdown, en route to their 28-20 victory, on the next play.
