*Barbra Streisand says she was the first choice to direct a planned remake of “A Star is Born” with Beyonce in the title role, which Streisand herself played in the famous 1976 remake of the 1937 original starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor.
Streisand enjoyed success as the director of 1983’s “Yentl” and the 1996 romantic drama “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” But when Warner Bros approached the legend to put her contemporary spin on “A Star is Born,” the 72-year-old said she wasn’t interested, even though she’s a huge fan of Beyonce.
“(With that film), I thought, ‘Been there, done that.’ But I’d love to direct her (in another project),” she told People magazine.
Clint Eastwood eventually signed on to direct the new “A Star Is Born” in 2011, but had to postpone the movie later that year when ‘Yonce became pregnant with Blue Ivy. She has since pulled out of the project altogether, and Warner Bros. put the film on hold again last year so that Eastwood could bring Broadway’s “Jersey Boys” to the big screen.
At the “Jersey Boys” press conference in June, Eastwood told us what appealed to him about the idea of updating “A Star is Born” with Beyonce, his transition to “Jersey Boys” once Bey pulled out of the project and why he said the “Star is Born” script is still “not satisfactory.”
