*EUR was on the scene in Los Angeles for the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, on the black carpet where Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, and Melle Mel talk being called the Godfathers of Hip Hop.
And Vic Mensa, T-Pain, Silento, and Kel Mitchell reveal what music videos they binge watch.
EUR: What other artists inspire you?
Vic Mensa: Right now I would say Kurt Cobain. Some of my favorite songs from Nirvana are “Come As You Are” and “Lithium.” I grew up on that music, it’s like my 5th grade music.
Silento: I loved Justin Bieber when I was younger, Usher, and Future. Mainly all the artists that were on BET and MTV. Linkin Park, Gorillaz; I listened to everybody.
Kool Moe Dee: I like a lot of new stuff now. I know it sounds cliché because he is the go to guy but Drake is an incredible artist. We have MC, rappers and we have artist. A lot of these guys are not necessarily great MCs or great rappers, according to the old heads, but they are incredible artist. The artistry is where you make your bones, especially if you are going to have longevity in this industry.
EUR: Did you ever believe you would have such a huge impact on music and Hip Hop?
Kool Moe Dee: From the very beginning, the generation that proceeded us said it was noise. All of our parents said, ‘turn that music down, what the heck are you doing, you’re not singing, and no one is going to pay to see anybody get on stage without a band.’ And then 25, 35 years later Jay Z’s a millionaire.
Grandmaster Caz: We come from apart of Hip Hop, when Hip Hop was in the streets, before the music industry. Hip Hop was six years old before it made a first record. We’ve been a part of the culture from the beginning.
EUR: Aside from your own, what music videos can you binge watch?
T-Pain: I’ve been in a lot of videos…Does it have to be a music video or a YouTube video because I got plenty of those! A music video would be 50 Cent, “I Get Money.”
Vic Mensa: Pharrell, “Frontin.'” That video is so fresh, even though he got his shirt off the whole time. Whatever, that video is so fresh.
Silento: Tori Kelly.
Kel Mitchell: ‘AYO!’ Just cause I be dancing to it. That Chris Brown and Tyga joint.
