*Mary J. Blige has joined the cast of “Mudbound,” a drama helmed by “Bessie” director Dee Rees.
The film follows two men returning home from World War II to work on a farm in rural Mississippi. Once there, they struggle to deal with racism and adjust to life after the war.
Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedland, Carey Mulligan and “Straight Outta Compton” lead Jason Mitchell also star in the project, which is being filmed in New Orleans.
Virgil Williams (“Criminal Minds”) penned the screenplay based on Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel of the same name. Cassian Elwes (Elevated), Charles King (Macro), Kim Roth, Sally Jo Effenson Chris Lemole, Tim Zajaros and Carl Effenson are producing. Poppy Hanks will exec produce.
MACRO the media entity established by former WME partner King to create premium content for African-American, Latino and multicultural audiences in 2015, will co-finance with Zeal. Poppy Hanks exec produces.
