*”Keep a little ratchet in your life! You need ratchet balance!”
Godmother Oprah, is okay with ratch-ness, in small doses.
The media mogul, was all giggles and dancing at the premiere of “Greenleaf,” set to launch with a two-night premiere on June 21 and June 22 on OWN.
EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas was on the green carpet and asked the stars of the new mega church drama, what’s their ratchet barometer.
EUR: Do you think viewers are ready to turn off the ratchet and turn on nutritious TV?
Oprah: No! I don’t think people are ready to turn off the ratchet! You can still watch the ratchet, you just can’t watch it on OWN! And I’m all for the ratchet! If ratchet turns you on, keep a little ratchet. Keep a little ratchet. Ehhh! Keep a little ratchet in your life! You need ratchet balance. One of the things I wanted to do with the show, is have it be fun and entertaining, but also have a message, so at the end of an episode you don’t say to yourself, “what did I watch that for?” “Why did I give my time for that?” We’re not ratchet, but we’re styling!
Keith David: If you feed people better stuff, they’ll have better taste. You have to elevate your taste. If you keep giving people crap, they’ll get used to it. I think people are ready for it, I think people are hungry for it.
Anna Diop: Yes! People were ready 5 or 10 years ago! You don’t know if you are ready until you have it. So here it is!
EUR: As an actress what kind of risks do you take?
Oprah: A huge risk I take as an actress is coming up in an episode…I don’t have a lot of anger. I’m not a person who’s ever carried a lot of anger. I can count on one hand the times I’ve yelled at someone or raised my voice…There is a scene with me and Lynn Whitfield where I really had to dig in deep like, “where can I find this? Was I angry with my grandfather?” Finding the space where you can pull that emotion. I had such a headache afterwards
EUR: What is one thing learned from working with Oprah?
Kim Hawthorne: She is a goddess among us. She is so humble and laid back. The way she navigates is smooth and natural. She is a wonderful motivator, a wonderful delegator, and a leader.
Anna Diop: She walks the walk and I’ve witnessed it. You meet her and she makes you feel like you’re not talking to one of the most influential women in the world.
