*InStyle‘s September cover girl, Kerry Washington, is preparing to be a mother to baby number two, so the actress is dishing about motherhood and getting parenting advice from “Scandal” creator, Shonda Rhimes, for the publication.
“I consider myself busy,” the 39-year-old said, “But Shonda has about four or five shows, three kids … She says, ‘If you feel like you have just the right amount of help, then you don’t have enough.’ My therapist said this too. You need a lot of support. Not just logistically but emotionally and spiritually.”
Washington, who was just nominated for an Emmy for her role on HBO’s “Confirmation,” also opened up about stepping out of the limelight. She told InStyle:
“You arrive at a certain place of achieving and suddenly you feel like your goals are being dictated by other people. Right now, as I get ready for this second baby, it’s really about me being in touch with what I want. I didn’t get here because I was trying to be what somebody else wanted me to be … So for now, I’m leaving myself open to the adventure.”
Kerry and her husband, former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha, are already parents to a 2-year-old daughter, Isabelle Amarachi. Although Washington is pregnant with her second child, her character on the hit TV series “Scandal” is not. The actress revealed that in the upcoming season there have been a lot of adjustments to Olivia Pope’s wardrobe.
“There’s nothing high-end for professional women who are pregnant, so for the show, we wind up just buying the same clothes,” she said in the September issue of InStyle magazine. “We will cut out the front of Armani trousers and put in a pregnancy panel. That’s what we do for everything.”
Washington’s issue hits newsstands August 12.
