*Micah Street, a black student at Wake Forest High School in North Carolina, was suspended from school on Friday (March 3) following his physical altercation with a white student.
But according to fellow student Tyler Goodell, who posted footage of the fight on Instagram, Street was defending himself against racial harassment that Goodell said has been going on for months with no action from the school.
The video starts with Street grabbing the white student from behind and slamming him into the floor. The white student then calls Micah “a black piece of sh*t.” A white teacher then steps in and begins yelling at Street, who attempts to explain the racism that preceded his physical response. But the teacher notes that the white student only “used words.”
Street was originally suspended from school for ten days, but it was later reduced to five.
He told CBS North Carolina that he lost his temper only after months of taking racist abuse from the white student. Students at the school chanted and protested in support of Micah on Monday, with calls to “Bring Micah back.”
His mother told CBS, “How am I going to send my son back to Wake Forest is what I want to know…because I’m sending him back to the shooting range is what I’m doing. So I’m totally clueless I don’t know what to do.”
