*Actress Shanica Knowles, best known for her recurring role as the rival to Miley Cirus on Hannah Montana, has landed on the Top 50 of the Billboard Dance Club Chart with “My Return Address is You,” her dance-floor collaboration with Adam Davenport.

With its second week on the chart, the song has moved up from #44 to #38 for the week of September 2, 2017. “My Return Address is You,” released by Independent Ear through SRG-ILS/Universal Music Group, made the third highest debut on the Top 50 last week and is in good company on the chart alongside Calvin Harris’ “Feels,” Zedd & Liam Payne’s “Get Low” and Rihanna’s “Desperado.”

Shanica, who would describe her own signature sound as alternative country pop, cites Sarah Mclachlan, Nora Jones, Tracy Chapman and Sheryl Crow as a few of her musical influences. Shanica shared a few personal thoughts regarding “My Return Address is You”:

“Music has always been a representation of expressing all things through the power of all sounds. As an artist, it’s always fun for me create something new by dabbling into other genres. Dance music is something I’ve never tried before, so when Adam reached out to collaborate with him on this record, it was hard for me to say no because the song was so inspiring. It’s something the world needs right now because it’s a positive anthem for this generation. I think that the message of this song will really uplift people in a way they haven’t felt in a long time, and just dance.”

Davenport is one of the first openly LGBT black artists to chart on Billboard. Frank Ocean previously accomplished this feat; most recently, his single “Chanel” charted at #72 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in April and “Slide,” his feature collaboration with Calvin Harris & Migos, peaked at #25 on the Billboard Dance Club Chart in May.

The Billboard Dance Club chart is compiled exclusively from playlists submitted by nightclub disc jockeys who have met certain criteria to become Billboard-reporting DJs. “My Return Address is You” transcends genres, sitting comfortably between radio-friendly EDM, indie pop and house music for peak hour club play. Says Dancing Astronaut’s Andrew Spada:

“A commendable debut, Davenport’s first club track has been re-ignited by the features on its remix package. A sonic revival at the hands of Ukrainian newcomer Marat Leon re-imagines the track into a bustling dance floor flame that uses hollow bass lines and filtered stutters with chilling effect. The result is a gripping remix that makes impeccable use of Knowles’ powerful vocals – and one that is already topping the charts.”

The newly minted summer dance hit is the debut single from Davenport, a Yale graduate who is also a filmmaker and actor (High Maintenance on HBO, the upcoming feature Project Olympus). He co-wrote the song with Leslie Mills, an Emmy-nominated songwriter based in Nashville.
