*When you’re desperate, you do stupid things. Just ask Peandra Winn, a Steak ‘n Shake employee in North Carolina who is being accused by a customer of making over $600 in unauthorized charges to the customer’s debit card.

Here’s the back story. Courtney Parks, went through the drive-thru at the Steak ‘n Shake in Concord and handed the cashier (Winn) her debit card.

Lo and behold, the next day, Parks saw $600 in unauthorized charges on her account, according to her friend, Dore Wright.

Allegedly Winn used the card’s info at clothing stores, and paid money to Duke Energy and Allstate, among others.

After seeing the card being used to purchase various items and to pay bills, Wright and Parks ran Winn’s name by the businesses that had the unauthorized charges and they confirmed it was her.

They went back to Steak ‘n Shake to confront Winn.

“That was my child’s day care money,” Parks told Winn. “That was my car payment. My kid’s day care check bounced because you stole all my bill money.”

And right there it appears Winn confessed in a video that Wright shot.

“I’m so sorry about that,” she said. “I’m sorry about that. I’m willing to pay you all the money back.”

Then the conversation gets even more heated.

“Did you really think what you did was clever enough that you didn’t think that your name was going to get?” Wright said.

“No, no ma’am,” Winn said. “I knew this was going to happen. I’m sorry.”

“You knew?” one of Parks’ friend said. “So, you just wanted to get in trouble?”

“I don’t want to be in trouble,” Winn said.

Parks filed a police report, but so far, no one has been charged in the case.

Channel 9 contacted Steak ‘n Shake to see if it is aware of the situation, whether the employee (Peandra Winn) still works there and requested the company’s response. The business had not responded by 4 p.m. Friday.
